Fieldgate Farmstead is located in a rural very quiet area of the Lake District National Park, just outside the village of Bampton Grange, 4 miles from Shap and 5 miles from junction 39 of the M6 motorway, and centrally placed to reach most of the National Parks many attractions , too many to list individually, quickly and easily by road.

Local Pubs / Restaurants
- The Greyhound. An imaginatively modernised old pub with some really quirky features and accommodation.
- The Crown Inn. A friendly pub in the middle of the village
- The Shap Chippy. Always right at the top of the National chippy awards. This middle of the village chippy is really the best place for a fish and chip takeout or a superb sit down fish supper
Askam. The next village North of Bampton , and just adjacent to the Lowther Estate, has two lovely village pubs.
- The Punchbowl. Village greens outside, log fires inside and excellent food and a friendly service
- The Queens Head. A terrific village pub with lots of ambience. Clifton on the A6.
- The George and Dragon. A friendly, comfortable, attractive pub with good Food.
- The M6 Service Station at Tebay, jct 38 , an Hotel. An interesting hotel on a service station ? Yes...an independently owned service station by a local family has created not only a superb hotel, but also an entirely different shopping experience in the service station shops. With everything owned by the family company in the service station, no franchises, there is an excellent choice of food to eat and superb country foodstuffs to take away from the onsite butchers and bakery.
- The Westmoreland Hotel. M6 Services. Great food and drinks for the weary traveller just arrived or passing through Cumbria.
Orton. A village close to jct 38 on the M6 with a Farmers Market every 2nd Saturday of the month in the village square
- The George Hotel, Orton,. Right on the route of the Coast to Coast Walk ,this village pub/hotel offers the friendliest of welcomes from landlady Bronagh, excellent pub food, good accommodation, outside Garden area, log fires and a laid back ambience.
Crosby Ravensworth. A very pretty village at the east of the Eden Valley.
- The Butchers Arms. A community pub owned and run under the supervision of the local village. Normally excellent food.
ATTRACTIONS
- Lowther Castle , Grounds and Tearoom. The historic home of the Lonsdale Family ( The Earl of Lonsdale ,known as the yellow Earl , founded the AA, with at one time owning land stretching continuously from the west to east coast), the Castle is now a ruin but with parts still open, the extensive grounds are good to walk in and there is a tea room for refreshments. A great venue for a half day visit
- Haweswater Reservoir is just out of sight of Fieldgate Farmstead. It was built in 1929 to supply Manchester with water and still does so .The damming of the valley flooded and submerged the villages of Measand and Mardale Green. When the reservoir is low on water it is still possible to see outlines of the villages. There is a cul de sac road that runs the full length of one side of the Lake with stunning views.
- Ice Cream Farm. The Abbott Lodge Jersey Ice Cream Farm is just off the A6 North of Shap In Clinton and close to Lowther Park. The Farm makes a huge range of ice creams from the milk from its own herd of Jersey cows. It’s a must stop for any children in your holiday group.
- Larch Cottage Garden Nursery, Melkinthorpe. This garden centre ,plant nursery and cafe /restaurant is a must visit for anyone interested in Gardens and plants. It a quirky horticultural jewel hidden away in the rural Eden Valley a mile or so off the A6 north of Shap. The garden centre has a huge range of stunning plants all set in Romanesque display gardens. The cafe / restaurant has lovely local food situated in lovely converted barns. An ideal place for a trip out and a leisurely lunch.
- Shap Village Outdoor Swimming Pool.
- Orton Farmers Market. This takes place in the square of the village of Orton every second Saturday of the month. Stalls of all sorts of farming produce, bread, cakes, biscuits, and jams, fresh local lamb, beef, sausages and other meats , and various locally produced drinks. A retreat to the George Hotel for a pint and lunch is often popular after a couple of hours shopping at the stalls .
